 The game of blackjack begins with the player placing a wager, after which they receive two cards with the dealer showing only one. Each card is worth its face value, i.e. a two is worth two points, a four is worth four points, and so on and so forth, except that face cards (J, Q, K) all have a value of ten and an ace can either be 1 or 11 as the player prefers.

After receiving their initial two cards, the player can either signal for a hit, if they wish to draw another card, or stand if they are happy with their total. Going over 21, or having your hand beaten by the dealer means that you lose. Conversely, if the dealer busts, or stays on a total less than your hand, you win. 

In addition to hitting and splitting, the player also has the option to double down on their initial two cards, taking exactly one more card and doubling the size of their wager. Some casinos may allow surrender, where you forfeit your wager and receive a fifty percent rebate as compensation. Additionally, if you are dealt any pair like 77, you can match your wager and split your holding into two hand.

Once you have chosen to stay, the dealer must then resolve their hand using a fixed strategy of hitting if they have sixteen or less and staying on seventeen or above.

If you receive an ace and a face as your first two cards, this is considered a “blackjack” and not only offers an instant win, the house must pay a 50% bonus on top, so if you bet $100 you will make a profit of $150 after receiving a two card 21.

Strategy Tips

It is important to consider not only your hand, but also the dealer’s up card as well. If they have a card between 2-6, this is considered a “bust card”, and you should be more cautious about when you choose to draw, since there is a decent chance the dealer will bust. Conversely, if they are showing a 7, 8, 9, T, J, Q, K, or A then you should follow the dealer’s strategy of hitting until you have seventeen or more, because the chance of them busting is not great.

If you are lucky enough to hold a total of 10 (for example 4,6 or 3,7) or 11 (like 3,8 or 9,2) then you should strongly consider doubling down. There is a good chance you will make a very strong hand, since 30% of the cards in a blackjack shoe are tens. Even if you get a bad card like a five, the dealer could still easily bust, especially if they have a bust card. Doubles and splits are great winning opportunities in blackjack, although they also present significant risk as well.

Split aggressively if the dealer has a 2-6, but be cautious about splitting against a dealer high card.

History of Blackjack

Blackjack dates back to at least the 17th century and was popular amongst the wealthier members of French society. Known then as vingt-et-un (literally twenty and one), the game was spread to the colonies by French settlers, and by the 19th century was a staple of the gambling establishments in New Orleans.
